Lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) are kinds of light that have a very high level of intensity. Lasers are for example used in industrial processing of materials, research work, measuring instruments and as part of medical and cosmetic treatments. Lasers are also used in light shows at events such as concerts. IPL is used in cosmetic treatment. Both lasers and IPL risk causing eye and skin damage, so they must be used with caution. It is prohibited to use powerful laser pointers without a special permit.
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority develops rules and regulations for lasers and IPL and advises on their use. The Authority also issues permits for powerful laser pointers and lasers used in public areas, and performs inspections of organisations that use lasers or IPL.
